The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has approved a new composition of field rations for Ukrainian soldiers. The daily rations for the Ukrainian military will include halal and kosher dry rations for the first time, designed to meet the religious beliefs of the soldiers and to improve nutrition standards in the Armed Forces. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

“The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has approved an updated technical specification for a daily field food package. Now, in addition to the usual ones, halal and kosher dry rations can be purchased for the military. This should improve the nutrition of servicemen in accordance with their religious needs,” the ministry said.

The new rations are still designed for three meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner. But now its range is flexibly adapted to the cultural and religious needs of the military.

Halal rations are designed for military personnel who follow Islamic dietary norms. At the same time, kosher rations meet the requirements of kashrut and are intended for military personnel who practice Judaism.

In general, the rations consist of three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and include:

  • Biscuits made from first grade wheat flour
  • Crackers made of first-grade wheat flour or upholstery flour
  • Ready-to-eat first course (borscht with meat or assorted soups with meat)
  • Ready-to-eat second course (cereals with meat or vegetables with meat in assortment)
  • Instant coffee
  • Tea
  • Sugar
  • Natural honey
  • Fruit jam (assorted)
  • Ground black pepper
  • Salt
  • Disposable plastic spoon
  • Paper napkin
  • Hygienic wet napkin.

Depending on the type of dry rations (regular, halal or kosher), the range of first courses includes borscht with beef or soups with pork, chicken, lamb or beef. Accordingly, the list of main courses includes, among other things, a variety of porridges with pork, beef, lamb, chicken, etc.

the new technical specifications take into account not only religious standards but also high requirements for product quality and nutritional value. In addition, ready-to-eat first and second courses should be packaged in retort packs, a modern packaging that ensures a long shelf life.

Halal dry rations comply with Islamic nutritional standards and are manufactured to standards certified by accredited bodies. Kosher diets are designed in accordance with kashrut requirements and strict restrictions on the composition of ingredients.
