Another 700,000 Ukrainians will move abroad in 2024-2025 due to electricity problems and hostilities in Ukraine. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to the a forecast by the Of the National Bank of Ukraine.
While in April 2024, the National Bank expected an outflow of 200,000 people this year and an inflow of 400,000 next year, it now estimates the outflow this year at 400,000 and next year at 300,000 Ukrainians.
“This assumption has been worsened by the significant destruction of the Ukrainian energy system, which is accompanied by prolonged power outages and increases the risks to the heating season,” the NBU said in its report.
It is projected that the net return of migrants to Ukraine will begin only in 2026 and will be gradual.
In early July, the National Bank of Ukraine published its monthly review. It said that as of 13 June, 6.6 million people had left Ukraine. The reason for this was a long-term power outage.
“At the same time, migration abroad intensified in May-June: the number of migrants increased to 6.6 million as of 13 June 2024, according to the UN, which could be due to the electricity shortage,” the report of the national financial regulator said.
