Ostroh mayor fired after scandal with russian songs

Deputies of the Ostroh City Council in Rivne region decided to dismiss the mayor, Yuriy Yahodka. He was accused of listening to Russian songs and insulting local residents. This became known during the broadcast of the meeting on the Instagram page of the city council, Komersant ukrainskyi reports

Yuriy Yahodka was deprived of his powers due to “failure of the mayor of Ostroh to exercise the powers granted to him by law, lack of proper control over the activities of structural units and utilities, failure to fulfill the duties provided for in Article 8 of the Law of Ukraine “On Service in Local Self-Government Bodies”.

“Twenty-five city deputies voted in favor. One deputy abstained. 8 deputies did not participate in the voting.

The explanatory note to the decision “On Early Termination of Powers of the Mayor of Ostroh” states that “during the term of office of Yuriy Petrovych Yahodka, the Mayor of Ostroh, there were facts and circumstances that indicate that he violated the laws of Ukraine, the rights and freedoms of citizens, as well as failed to ensure the exercise of the powers granted to him.”

In particular, it is said that in late August, the head of the community, while drunk, sang Russian songs and attacked an activist who made a remark to him with his fists. According to the press service of the Rivne Regional Police, a pre-trial investigation was initiated under Article 125, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional minor bodily harm). Yuriy Yahodka acknowledged the situation by posting an apology on social media.

And in September 2024, the community was outraged by the absence of government officials at the funeral of soldier Oleh Latyshev. Later, the official resources of the city council and the mayor’s own posts called the soldier a deserter, which caused an even greater outcry.

During the session, the first deputy mayor Mykhailo Kyryychuk, deputy mayor for executive bodies Olha Logvin, deputy mayor for executive bodies Valentyna Striletska, and deputy mayor for executive bodies Olesya Kashuba were also dismissed.

It was also decided that Kostyantyn Kyryliuk would act as mayor.

Yahodka has been the mayor of Ostroh since November 2020.
