The mayor of Zhytomyr, Sergey Sukhomlin, has resigned from his post ahead of schedule. The decision was made at an extraordinary session of the Zhytomyr City Council. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to the Zhytomyr City Council.
This decision was supported by 33 deputies in a secret ballot.
“This is a difficult decision that has been made for several weeks… Back in 2015, I decided to run for mayor… It was made earlier, probably in 2006, after the Maidan, when we tried to tell someone something, to suggest something, and then decided that if you want to do something, do it yourself. Then there was the path of a deputy of the city council, the regional council..
After that, there were elections in 2015. For me personally, it was a challenge… I said I didn’t want to be mayor forever, because sometimes you lose motivation, and you’re definitely not the smartest in this city. There are people who can also give impetus to this city. But it is important to do something that no one has done before you. I always wanted Zhytomyr to be the first. The main thing is to have a dream… And then everything will work out,” said Sukhomlyn.
In a commentary to journalists , the mayor said that he was going to join the Armed Forces, passed the preliminary examination, the TCC and the JV, but did not receive approval from the General Staff, so he “received another offer”.
“When I took this position, I had a desire to work to make Zhytomyr the first. Today, Zhytomyr is the first to replace street lighting, and the city was the first to have no power cuts during the full-scale war. According to various ratings, our city is a leader in terms of support for the Armed Forces. Zhytomyr has the lowest losses in the heating network in Ukraine. We were the first to introduce an electronic ticket. This is a very difficult job and there were mistakes, because those who do it make them,” said Sukhomlin.
The mayor added that his family remains in Zhytomyr.
Sergiy Sukhomlyn was elected mayor in 2015. He was re-elected for the second time in the 2020 elections.
