Mazepa was kept in custody: everything that is known about the detention of the businessman

On January 23, the Kiev Court of Appeal decided to reduce the bail amount for Igor Mazepa to 21 million hryvnia, keeping him under arrest until the end of February, reports комерсант with reference to hromadske.

At the meeting, which was held via video link due to the impossibility of Mazepa’s personal presence, appeals from both sides were presented. The prosecutor’s office insisted on increasing the bail amount to 700 million hryvnias, while Mazepa’s defense demanded the cancellation of the decision of the Pechersky District Court.

Mazepa’s lawyer, Taras Poshivanyuk, presented 10 letters requesting Mazepa’s release on bail, including a letter from MP Andrei Gerus.

Mazepa’s defense in court questioned the validity of the charges and also argued that the State Bureau of Investigation has no authority in this case, since the State GeoCadastre is not a law enforcement agency. They also claimed the court was biased, noting that the decision was “copied from the prosecution.”

For his part, the prosecutor noted at the meeting that the amount of bail was determined taking into account the potential risks and financial condition of Mazepa, including his ownership of 150 real estate properties and other valuable assets.

Who is Igor Mazepa

Igor Mazepa, who founded the investment company Concorde Capital, was born on July 2, 1976 in Kyiv. He received two degrees in international economics and law, began his career in 1997, becoming the chief executive of a company specializing in securities trading, and founded Concorde Capital in 2004. Mazepa also ran for the Verkhovna Rada and was a member of the supervisory board of Ukrsotsbank.

At the end of May, Mazepa announced the creation of an anti-rating of law enforcement officers and judges who use their powers for illegal purposes.

In October 2023, he got into a scandal when he flew by helicopter to hunt in Croatia.

Why was Igor Mazepa detained?

Mazepa was detained on January 18 by the State Bureau of Investigation while crossing the Ukrainian-Polish border on charges of illegal privatization of land plots in the Kyiv region. According to the accusation, he is accused of appropriating land that includes the hydraulic structures of the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Station are located for the construction of the elite residential complex Goodlife Park in the Vyshgorod district. This complex covers 40 hectaresand includes a yacht club, a mini-hotel, a restaurant, a children’s park, sports grounds and a fitness center.

On January 19, the Pechersky District Court determined a preventive measure for Mazepa in the form of detention with the possibility of posting bail in the amount of 349 million hryvnia.

What Mazepa says

Mazepa commented on his arrest, claiming that prosecutors had problems with calculations, and stated that the only “Russian trace” in the case was the Russian words that he heard during his arrest. He also noted that the suspicion concerns the allocation of a land plot measuring 2.4 hectares and allegedly caused damage to the state in the amount of 7 million hryvnia. Mazepa pointed out the discrepancy between the charges and the proposed bail amount.

SBI spokesperson Tatyana Sapyan explained that the investigation of this crime is complex and takes time, since the case is connected to a large and complex scheme. She noted that the investigation has reached the stage where the announced suspicions have a sufficient evidence base. The speaker also emphasized that the crime concerns seven hectares of land, which was re-registered to nominees for the construction of cottage communities.
