Mate 70: US sanctions have only pushed Huawei to enter the big league of technology
25 November 2024 15:45
Chinese tech giant Huawei is planning to release its first premium smartphone that will run on its own HarmonyOS Next operating system. The device is intended to demonstrate the company’s independence from Western technology, emphasizing the growing divide between the US and Chinese tech ecosystems. This was reported by the Financial Times, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The new smartphone, known as the Mate 70, is positioned as an alternative to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. Huawei sees HarmonyOS Next as a key platform to compete with American tech giants.
Success despite sanctions
The release of the new operating system was made possible by Huawei’s technological achievements despite the sanctions imposed by the United States in 2019. The restrictions forced the company to stop using Google’s mobile services and develop the first version of HarmonyOS based on the open source Android. This made it possible to run Android applications on Huawei devices.

Now HarmonyOS Next demonstrates Huawei’s ambition to create a fully autonomous ecosystem. The launch of the Mate 70 is another step towards this, following the successful release of the Mate 60 last year. This device has a Chinese-made processor of its own design capable of providing 5G speeds. It is worth noting that the creation of such a chip had previously caused skepticism in the United States, where its implementation was considered unlikely.
Financial performance
Despite the US sanctions, Huawei is showing steady growth. The company reported that in the first nine months of 2024, its sales increased by 30% compared to the same period last year. This emphasizes that the US restrictions not only did not stop Huawei, but also helped it to strengthen its position as a leading technology player.
Thus, the Mate 70 with HarmonyOS Next will be an important milestone for Huawei in its fight for leadership in the smartphone market and an indicator that Chinese companies are finally gaining a foothold in the high-tech market as a fully self-sufficient force.
The official presentation of the Mate 70 is scheduled for tomorrow, November 26.
