On March 14, the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Mark Carney, took the oath of office and officially became the country’s new prime minister.
This was reported by the CBC, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
He became the 24th prime minister of Canada. He is expected to call parliamentary elections in the near future.
Mark Carney is an economist.
He was the governor of the Bank of Canada in 2008-2013, in the first years after the global financial crisis. Then, in 2013-2020, he headed the Bank of England, and his service in this position fell during the tumultuous years of Brexit.
Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister of Canada, who announced his intention to resign in January of this year.
Carney was the only candidate for Liberal Party leader who was not part of Trudeau’s government, and he won 85.9% of the vote.
His main rival, former finance minister and current member of parliament Chrystia Freeland, received 8%.
In addition to a fierce battle with the opposition in this year’s general election, the new prime minister will also have to negotiate difficult tariff talks with the United States amid President Donald Trump’s claims.
