“Lviv Polytechnic will be headed by a woman for the first time: what is known about Natalia Shakhovska

For the first time in its history, a woman will become the rector of Lviv Polytechnic National University, Komersant ukrainskyi reports. Natalia Shakhovska, head of the university’s Department of Artificial Intelligence, will head the institution.

In the election of the university rector, Shakhovska received the largest number of votes – 1868 (55.09%).

The new rector has already promised impossible achievements – to make Lviv Polytechnic the best university in Europe.

“A new page in the history of Lviv Polytechnic has begun. Together we will definitely make our native alma mater the best university not only in Ukraine but also in Europe,”

– she wrote on social media.

Nataliia Shakhovska: profile

Natalia Shakhovska was born on December 2, 1978, in Lviv. She is a Ukrainian scientist, Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor, founder and head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems at the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology at Lviv Polytechnic University.

In 1995, Natalia Shakhovska entered Lviv Polytechnic as a student at the Department of Information Systems and Networks. In 2000, she received a master’s degree in Decision Support Systems. From 2001 to 2007, she worked as an assistant at the Department of Information Systems and Networks at the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology, Lviv Polytechnic National University.

In 2007, she successfully defended her PhD thesis on “Modeling uncertainty in data warehouses based on a relational approach”. From 2007 to 2013, she worked as an associate professor at the Department of Information Systems and Networks. In October 2012, she successfully defended her doctoral dissertation on “Organization of data spaces in complex information systems”.

From September 2013 to 2018, Nataliia Shakhovska worked as a professor at the Department of Information Systems and Networks and Dean of the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology at Lviv Polytechnic National University. Since July 2018, she has been heading the newly created Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems.

Nataliia Shakhovska’s research interests include big data analysis, intelligent decision support systems, data integration and aggregation methods, uncertainty reduction methods, and distributed information systems design. She is a research coordinator and participant in the international research project “Internet of Things Hub-laboratory” of the Horizon2020 cascade funding program.

Shakhovska’s scientific output includes more than 300 scientific papers, including monographs, chapters of foreign monographs, publications in professional and foreign journals, and materials of international scientific and practical conferences.

Since 2016, Shakhovska has been a co-organizer of the Annual International Scientific and Practical Conference “Computer Sciences and Information Technologies” (CSIT), whose materials are indexed in the Scopus and Web of Sciences databases. Since 2018, the professor has been organizing the International Workshop “Informatics and Data-Driven Medicine” (IDDM), the materials of which are indexed in the Scopus and DBLP databases. She is a member of the program committees of domestic and foreign conferences, including international conferences in Cyprus, Greece, Morocco, Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Nataliia Shakhovska’s educational activities include teaching courses “Artificial Intelligence in Game Applications” at Lviv Polytechnic National University, “Big Data Processing” at the University of Lodz (Poland), “Neurocontroller” at the University of Wuerzburg (Germany), “Artificial Intelligence” and “Intelligent Support Systems” at the University of Economics (Bydgoszcz, Poland).

Nataliia Shakhovska is a member of Lviv Polytechnic’s Academic Council and the head of the Master’s degree program.

As of 2018, 7 PhD theses have been defended under the supervision of Professor Shakhovska.

She is married to Roman Shakhovskyi and has a daughter.
