You can’t swim, but the water is clean: what a health officer says about Kyiv’s beaches

9 June 14:55

Despite the official ban on swimming, the water on Kyiv’s beaches currently meets sanitary standards. This was announced by the chief state sanitary doctor of the capital, Serhiy Chumak, in an interview with Ukrinform, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“Under martial law, the Kyiv City Military Administration did not officially allow swimming. But our Center for Disease Control and Prevention, together with other services, continues to monitor water in recreation areas. We take water samples and examine the sand on the beaches. If a person decides to swim, the water is currently safe in terms of sanitary indicators,” Chumak said.

In 2025, the swimming season in Kyiv will not officially open. The city authorities are urging visitors not to visit the beaches due to security concerns related to martial law and the inability to provide adequate shelters in case of an alarm.

Where can I officially swim as a result?
Officially, recreation and swimming in Kyiv is allowed only in specially designated and equipped places, in accordance with the decisions of local governments and regional military administrations.

Some beaches where water quality is regularly monitored:

  • “Zolotyi”,
  • “Slobodka Suburb,
  • “Tsentralnyi
  • “Molodizhnyi,
  • “Obolonsky Island,
  • “Troyeschyna,
  • “Pushcha-Vodytsia,
  • “Venice and
  • “Telbin.

Other beaches (Obolon Island, Verbnyi, Pushcha-Vodytsia, Troyeschyna, Chortoryi) also have water quality control, but officially swimming is prohibited.

In general, the swimming season is not officially open, but Kyiv is conducting beach inspections and water quality control. The authorities are urging people to limit their stay on the beaches and not to risk their health and safety under martial law.
