“Blood Moon today: when to watch and what not to do

14 March 04:01

Today, March 14, a total lunar eclipse will take place. During the event, the full moon will turn red, which is why the phenomenon is called the “Blood Moon,” Komersant ukrainskyi reports

Why does the Moon turn “bloody”?

According to NASA, during a total lunar eclipse, the Earth completely covers the Moon from direct sunlight, which causes its surface to turn dark red. This is due to the refraction of light in our planet’s atmosphere – the sun’s rays pass through the Earth’s atmosphere, scattering and leaving only red hues on the Moon.

According to NASA, the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. At first, it will look like it has been “bitten off” on one side. Over time, the satellite will turn dark red. Then the eclipse will develop in reverse: the red color will gradually disappear, and the dark part of the Moon will shrink until it looks normal.

How long will the eclipse last and when can I see it?

The total lunar eclipse will take place on March 14, 2025. The phenomenon will begin at 05:57 am Kyiv time and end at 12:00 pm.

The most spectacular phase, when the Moon will be completely submerged in the Earth’s shadow and will turn a blood red hue, will last from 08:26 to 09:31.

This is the perfect time for those who want to watch the space show, although in Ukraine, due to the early morning hours, visibility may be difficult.

Where can I see the lunar eclipse on March 14, 2025?

The lunar eclipse is theoretically available for observation around the world, but the best conditions will be in regions where night will prevail at the time of the event. The clearest phenomenon will be visible in:

  • North and South America, where the eclipse will occur at night.
  • East Asia, where the event will coincide with the moonrise.
  • Some European countries, although there the Moon will already begin to set over the horizon.

In Ukraine, the situation is less favorable: the moonrise will take place at 06:18 Kyiv time, which will make it difficult to observe the full phase of the eclipse due to daylight and the low position of the Moon above the horizon. For a better view, we recommend heading out of town, away from light pollution.

In Ukraine, the Moon will be red for a little over an hour, but not as dark as during other eclipses. The best viewing conditions will be in regions with minimal light pollution and clear skies.

The total lunar eclipse will be visible to the naked eye.

It is best to look at the Moon in open areas, away from city lights and other light sources. For a more detailed view of the eclipse, you can use a telescope or binoculars.

When is the next eclipse?

Another total lunar eclipse will occur in September, followed by another in March.

Impact of a lunar eclipse on humans

The lunar eclipse will take place during a full moon, which is traditionally considered a time of increased emotional stress. Women and people with an unstable psychological state are most affected by the eclipse. On such days, emotions can run high, and impulsivity can prevail.

During an eclipse, these effects are amplified. Astrologers and psychologists advise:

  • Avoid conflicts and provocations.
  • Maintain calm and balance.
  • Direct your energy to creativity or useful activities.

So on March 14, 2025, you should pay attention to your inner state and avoid stressful situations.

What shouldn’t you do during a lunar eclipse?

There are folk beliefs and traditions that warn against certain actions on the day of a lunar eclipse. Here’s what’s not recommended:

  1. Starting new projects or businesses.
  2. Going on long trips.
  3. Make important decisions or sign documents.
  4. Invest money, take out loans, or borrow money.
  5. Change your appearance (for example, cut or dye your hair).
  6. Plan transactions (except for emergencies).
  7. Get into quarrels or break off relationships.
  8. Start a new romantic relationship.

These prohibitions are based on the belief that the eclipse amplifies negative energy, so it is better to wait it out in peace.
