Cosmetics, cigars, toilet paper: 1700 goods from the US to be imposed by the EU
16 April 09:40
The European Union has published a list of American goods that will be subject to countervailing duties if trade negotiations with the United States are not successful. This was reported by CNN, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
About 400 American products from the EU list may face increased duties as early as mid-July. Another 1,300 items may be subject to high import taxes at the same time or at a later stage.
The long list of goods includes American toilet paper, eye cosmetics, cigars and tobacco, as well as men’s and women’s clothing. Most imported goods will be subject to additional customs duties of 25%.
The EU’s measures were to come into effect on April 15 in response to a sharp increase in US duties on all steel and aluminum imports. However, the EU suspended its countermeasures for 90 days until July 14 after the US postponed the introduction of its so-called “retaliatory” duties.
According to the EU’s calculations based on official US data for 2023, the top five goods exported from America to the bloc include oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and medicines, aerospace products and components, medical equipment and supplies, and automobiles. Notably, these goods are not on the published list.
The United States has already imposed a 25% duty on steel and aluminum from the EU and a 25% duty on automobiles. As for President Donald Trump’s “retaliatory” 20% tariffs on all other goods from the bloc, they were reduced to 10% for 90 days.

Trump’s tariffs
on April 2, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of “mirror” tariffs against almost all countries of the world (except Russia, Belarus, Cuba, and the DPRK). These tariffs, according to the White House, will be half of the tariff that a particular country has imposed on US goods. For example, China allegedly imposes a 67% tariff on US goods, so the US imposed a 34% tariff on Chinese goods (which was later raised to 145%)
For those countries that do not impose special duties on American goods, a basic tariff of 10% was introduced.
Trump called the introduction of such trade barriers “Liberation Day” and said that this day would go down in US history as the beginning of the restoration of the American economy and greatness.
Interestingly, the comparative table released by the White House provides data on tariffs against 185 countries, but Russia is not on the list. Instead, it includes the Herd and McDonald Islands, which were subject to a basic 10% tariff. The only thing is that there is not a single person on these islands.
on April 9, Trump announced that he was postponing the introduction of tariffs for 90 days for those countries that did not retaliate but contacted Trump to negotiate. According to him, there were more than 75 such countries.
