Klitschko explains his words about ceding territories
25 April 18:57
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko says he did not discover America when he suggested in an interview with foreign journalists that Ukraine would have to give up the occupied territories.
He wrote about this on social media, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to Klitschko, many world politicians and media are now talking about forcing Ukraine to make territorial concessions. Therefore, he says, such a scenario is quite possible, and by voicing it, he has not opened up America.
At the same time, the mayor says, he emphasized in an interview that territorial concessions are contrary to Ukraine’s national interests, and the Ukrainian people will never accept occupation.
Therefore, “we must fight against its implementation to the last,” which will require “extraordinary efforts from both us and our European partners.”
What is known about Klitschko’s interview?
Today, on April 25, the BBC published an interview with Klitschko, in which he spoke about possible territorial concessions for peace with Russia.
“One of the scenarios is to give up territory. This is not fair. But for peace, temporary peace, perhaps this can be a solution, a temporary solution,” he said.
Territory issue in the negotiations
In an interview with pro-Russian journalist Tucker Carlson in March, Vitkoff called the issue of Crimea and “four regions”, the names of which he did not fully disclose, the biggest problem in resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war.
According to him, most of the population of these regions was allegedly Russian-speaking and wanted to join Russia. However, the problem is that the “elephant in the room,” as he called the Ukrainian Constitution, does not allow for the recognition of the occupied territories as Russian.
Ukraine maintains its position that it does not recognize the occupied territories as Russian, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.
Now it is reported that the United States is ready to recognize Russia’s control over Ukrainian Crimea as part of a “broader” peace deal to end the war in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine does not legally recognize the occupation of Crimea and “there is nothing to talk about.”
In addition, according to Reuters, the American plan stipulates that the United States will actually recognize Russia’s control over parts of Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions, while Ukraine will have to return the occupied parts of Kharkiv region, the Kakhovka Dam, and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
