The party’s candidates who had announced their intention to run failed to collect the required number of signatures.
“Harris received a majority of votes from all delegates to the convention and will be nominated as the Democratic Party’s candidate after the voting closes on Monday,” said Jamie Harrison, chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
About 4,000 delegates, who were allocated during the Democratic primary, took part in the voting. 3,923 Democrats voted for Harris. Harris needs at least 1976 votes to be officially nominated for the election.
“I am honoured to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for President of the United States,” she said.
The US Vice President stressed that she would officially accept the nomination next week.
“This campaign is about people coming together, inspired by their love for their country, to fight for the best that is in us,” she added.
Kamala Harris will be the first black woman and the first Asian American to be a presidential candidate of a major US party.
Harris is the second black person in the nearly 250-year history of the United States to lead a presidential campaign, after Barack Obama in 2008. Harris will also become the second female nominee of the party after Hillary Clinton in 2016.
The 2024 US presidential election is the next presidential election in the United States of America, scheduled for Tuesday 5 November and will be the 60th US presidential election.
The winner of this election will be inaugurated on 20 January 2025 and will become the 47th President of the United States of America.
