The Supervisory Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine has elected Sergiy Koretsky, CEO of Ukrnafta, as the new Chairman of the Board. This was reported by the specialized publication ExPro, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The decision was made at a meeting of the Supervisory Board on April 28. According to ExPro Gas&Oil Weekly, Sergiy Koretsky and Oleh Prokhorenko, who previously headed Ukrgasvydobuvannya and is best known for the 20/20 production stimulation program, have passed the final stage of selection.

According to Energoreforma, the new chairman of the board of Naftogaz, Sergiy Koretsky, has worked his way up from a junior analyst at Continuum Group to the CEO of the same company. From 2013 to the end of 2018, he developed the business of the WOG filling station chain as CEO, after which he began implementing his own projects. In early November 2022, Sergii Koretskyi became the CEO of PJSC Ukrnafta.

How this appointment is assessed

People’s Deputy of Ukraine Yaroslav Zheleznyak called this appointment “a rare case in the current political cycle and government when it is a good personnel decision.”

“Although it was a competition organized by the Supervisory Board,” the MP reminded.

Yaroslav Zheleznyak emphasized that Sergiy Koretsky showed good results at Ukrnafta and wished him success at the head of Naftogaz.

“A talented person with great experience and excellent results already as the chairman of the board of state-owned Ukrnafta,” Andriy Zhupanin, MP and member of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Housing and Utilities, wrote about the new head of Naftogaz.

According to him, very difficult times are ahead for the head of the largest company in Ukraine, as the country needs gas to get through the next winter, and Naftogaz needs to find funds to buy it, protect its facilities, and increase Ukrainian gas production.

Earlier this year, Naftogaz announced plans to import 4.5-4.6 billion cubic meters of gas by November 1, which should ensure a stable heating season in 2025/2026. The company has already started pumping gas into storage facilities. [Kommersant]reported on this.

The day before, Naftogaz and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development signed a loan and grant agreement that provides for a €270 million loan from the EBRD, as well as grant funding of €140 million provided by the Norwegian government through the NORAD fund. The funds will come through the EBRD. According to Naftogaz, this funding is already available and will be immediately used for gas imports. These funds will allow the purchase of almost 1 billion cubic meters of gas, which is critical for the stable passage of the next heating season.
