Israel has informed the US of plans for a ground invasion of Lebanon against the Hezbollah group. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to Reuters.
“At this time, they have told us that these are limited operations focused on Hezbollah infrastructure near the border, but we are in ongoing conversations with them about this,” said spokesman Matthew Miller.
Asked to confirm that these were limited ground operations, he said: “That is our understanding.”
Meanwhile, Reuters journalists, citing their own sources and local residents, reported that the Lebanese army was retreating from several positions on the southern border with Israel.
“The retreat comes amid growing speculation of an imminent Israeli ground invasion of southern Lebanon,” the report said.
A Lebanese army spokesman has neither confirmed nor denied this information.
Another security source said that Lebanese troops were at least five kilometres (3 miles) north of the border after the withdrawal.
