Historic achievement: Ukrainian reaches Australian Open semi-finals

24 January 09:55

For the first time in history, a Ukrainian tennis player has reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open tennis championships. This was achieved by 23-year-old Diana Yastremska from Odesa, reports комерсант

Last night (Kyiv time), Yastremska defeated Czech Republic’s Linda Nosova in two sets in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open – 2:0 (6:3, 6:4). It took her 1 hour and 20 minutes to do so, thanks to a good first serve (76%) and a confident return game.

It’s worth noting that before the tournament, Jastremska was ranked 93rd in the world rankings, but on her way to the semi-finals, in addition to Noskova, she defeated many higher-ranked opponents.

Jastremska’s opponent in the semi-finals will be determined in a match between Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya (No. 75) and China’s Qingwen Zhen (No. 15).

The semi-final with Jastremska will take place tomorrow at 12:00 Kyiv time.

Thus, Diana Yastremska has set a new record as she became the first Ukrainian tennis player to play in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. She also repeated the record of Elina Svitolina, who was the only Ukrainian tennis player to reach the semi-finals at Grand Slam tournaments (twice at Wimbledon in 2019 and 2023, as well as at the US Open in 2019).
