American entrepreneur and Tesla owner Elon Musk has said that Chinese automakers will “destroy” the entire global car industry if trade barriers are not imposed on them. This was reported by with reference to Reuters.
In particular, he called Chinese electric car manufacturers “the most competitive”.
“[They] will have significant success outside of China, depending on what tariffs or trade barriers are imposed. If there are no trade barriers, they will almost wipe out most of the other car companies in the world.”
– musk said.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to these words by stating the “need to maintain a fair, just and open business environment”.
These statements come amid reports that in the last quarter of 2023, Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD overtook Tesla in terms of electric car sales, selling more than 526,000 vehicles, while Tesla sold 484,000.
Along with statements about the need for restrictions on the global market for Chinese manufacturers, anonymous sources from Tesla told Reuters about plans to produce low-cost electric cars as early as 2025. Musk is allegedly focusing on a consumer price of $25,000, which is comparable to the cost of the Honda Civic electric car, which starts at $23,950 in the US market.
