The band ZWYNTAR accused Kvartal 95 of misusing their song

The music band ZWYNTAR has issued a statement regarding the unlawful use of their music by Kvartal 95. According to the musicians, their song “Mexican” was used in the studio’s concert on May 10, 2025, without permission, despite the band’s previous refusal. The band posted a statement on social media, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“We recently learned from our friends that Kvartal 95 Studio on May 10, 2025, used our music from the song “Mexican” in their concert, creating, in fact, a “derivative work”. A monetized video of this performance with our music is available on the studio’s YouTube channel,”
– the musicians report.
According to the band, representatives of Kvartal 95 approached them in advance about the rights to use the music, but were categorically refused.
“On April 11, 2025, we were approached by the music editor of Kvartal and the League of Laughter about the possibility of talking to us about the rights to our song. We replied that we were categorically against the use of our music in projects that were not aesthetically and conceptually close to us,”
– zWYNTAR says.

However, the refusal did not stop Kvartal. According to the band, Kvartal 95 used the musical basis of their song, positioning it as a parody. The musicians believe that the work created by the studio does not meet the legal definition of a parody. They claim that the studio simply took the band’s music and put their own words to it.
“So the situation is as follows: hiding behind an alleged parody of our work, despite our direct prohibition, Studio 95 Kvartal used our copyrighted melody. It should be noted that this “parody” was used during a commercial concert on May 10, 2025, from which the studio probably made a profit,”
– the musicians emphasize.
The band also expressed outrage at the possible association with Kvartal 95:
“We are incredibly outraged by the use of our music in such projects. We consider this a blow to our reputation and do not want to be associated in any way with the ‘creativity’ or political context of Studio 95 Kvartal.”
ZWYNTAR considers its public statement as an official pre-trial claim and does not rule out going to court if it does not receive proper explanations from Kvartal 95.
The official pages of Kvartal 95 have not yet responded to the band’s statement.
