Summer vacation schedule in 2025: when students will go on vacation

The school year in Ukraine is slowly coming to an end, which raises a number of questions. Students and their parents are wondering when this year’s summer vacation will start and how long it will last. According to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine’s Resolution No. 841, adopted on July 23, 2024, the current school year will last until June 30, Komersant ukrainskyi reports
When will summer vacation start in 2025?
During martial law, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine regulates the duration of schooling in schools. According to a government decree, summer vacation will last two months, from June 30 to August 31.
The Law of Ukraine “On Complete General Secondary Education” states that the end of the school year should be no later than July 1. However, the start of the vacation depends on the extent to which learning in the war affected students, whether they have educational losses, and what activities will be most effective in overcoming them. Last year, schools also continued until June 28.
It is worth noting that the last bell in most schools will ring on May 30.
However, students will still be immersed in the learning process throughout June. During this time, they will be able to finalize the topics provided for by the program, but for some reason unfinished. In addition, students will brush up on their knowledge, and some of them will also have time to prepare for upcoming exams.
Spring break: different dates in different schools
This year, educational institutions independently determined the time for spring break. As a result, some schools will have a vacation from April 16 to 23, dedicating it to Easter.
Other schools kept to the traditional schedule – at the end of March. Some went on vacation even earlier due to flu outbreaks.
This flexibility led to different workloads in schools, which necessitated the year’s extension.
Why was the school year extended?
According to official information, the extension of the school year is due to the need to compensate for the lost learning time. In recent years, studies have been complicated due to:
- Frequent air raids that interrupted classes in schools.
- Quarantine restrictions that affected the quality of learning.
- Changes in the vacation schedule that disrupted the standard rhythm of learning.
The Ministry of Education decided to extend the lessons until the end of June so that students could catch up on the material they had missed and prepare for the new school year.
New school year schedule
According to the resolution, the key dates will look like this:
- Last dayof school: may 30, 2025. This event will be symbolic, as school will continue for another month.
- End of the school year: june 30, 2025.
- Summer vacation: from July 1 to August 31, 2025.
- Start of the new school year: september 1, 2025 (unchanged).
Thus, instead of the traditional three months of summer vacation, students will have only two. This has caused a mixed reaction among parents and students, as the reduction of vacations may affect family vacation plans.
