What is happening in the Kursk region
On the evening of 6 August, the first reports about the breakthrough of unknown servicemen into the territory of the Kursk region of Russia appeared in the Ukrainian information space. Unknown units allegedly crossed the Ukrainian-Russian border from the Ukrainian side and moved deep into the region. At the same time, the Ukrainian military command maintains absolute information silence and almost all information comes to us from Russian publicks. At the same time, it is likely that this information should not be dismissed as unreliable, as this time the mood of Russian propagandists and war correspondents is quite panicky.
on 6 August, throughout the day there were reports of AFU units advancing north-west of Suja along the Daryino-Zelenyi Put line. Video footage of the shelling of Suzhi appeared on social networks. Local authorities reported a growing number of civilian casualties.
At 15:05, the Russian Defence Ministry for the first time officially commented on the situation, stating an attack from Ukraine by a force of up to 300 fighters supported by 11 tanks and more than 20 armoured vehicles. The ministry said it had sent reserves to the combat area and used army aviation.
In the evening of the same day, the Russian Defence Ministry deleted its previous statement about the retreat of the Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group. This raised further questions about the real situation on the ground.
On the night of 7 August , reports of explosions began to come in in the town of Kurchatov, where the Kursk nuclear power plant is located. It was assumed that air defence systems were operating there. This information emphasised the expansion of the conflict zone and the potential risks to critical infrastructure. And the town of Suja, located 10 kilometres from the Russian-Ukrainian border, was again shelled.
At 12:30 of the same day, the Russian Defence Ministry issued a statement about the continuation of the “operation to destroy AFU formations” in the Kursk region. The ministry claimed that the advance of the AFU deep into Russian territory had not been allowed and that Ukrainian forces had suffered significant losses in equipment and personnel. It also said that strikes were carried out against enemy reserves in Ukraine’s Sumy Region.
