Ukraine’s next bilateral security agreement after signing the treaty with the UK may be with Canada. Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine Natalie Tsmoc said this in an interview withYevropeiska Pravda, according to .
According to her, Canada has already sent a draft agreement to Ukraine.
“I am very pleased to inform you that on Friday Canada sent a copy of the agreement to Ihor Zhovkva to begin more detailed negotiations in order to complete the negotiations between Canada and Ukraine in a few weeks ,” the ambassador said.
The ambassador claims that the text of the draft refers to “security assurances”. Thus, Canada is not going to abandon the agreements already reached with our country and the promises made by the Canadian government.
“Back in September, during Zelenskyy’s visit to Canada, Prime Minister Trudeau said that Canada wanted to put its commitments to long-term support on paper so that Ukraine could be sure of the predictability of such support in the future ,” said Tsmots.
G7, the EU and security guarantees for Ukraine
In July 2023, at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Vilnius, the Presidents of the European Council, the European Commission and representatives of the G7 countries adopted a Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine. According to this document, each country pledged to develop its own bilateral agreement with Ukraine, which would include provisions on security cooperation and relevant guarantees for our country. Later, most EU countries joined this declaration. The declaration now has the signatures of 31 states.
The United Kingdom was the first to sign the relevant bilateral agreement provided for in the declaration. This happened during the visit of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to Kyiv on 12 January this year. According to the text of the agreement, “The main components of the security commitments made to Ukraine by the United Kingdom in this Agreement are
- providing Ukraine with comprehensive assistance to defend and restore its territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, including its territorial sea and free economic (maritime) zone, to rebuild its economy and protect its citizens;
- preventing and actively deterring and countering any military escalation and/or new aggression by the Russian Federation;
- support for Ukraine’s future integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions, in particular by supporting Ukraine’s reform plans and NATO compatibility.
Subsequently, the Ukrainian side announced that it was negotiating relevant agreements with six other countries: The United States, Canada, France, Germany, Poland, and Italy. In particular, the United States Ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, said that two rounds of talks had already taken place between Ukraine and the United States on the content and content of the relevant agreement with the US government. In addition, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that work on a similar agreement was also underway with Lithuania.
