Contaminated water from the Desna River will reach Kyiv on 10 September. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Olena Kramarenko in a commentary for LIGA, Komersant ukrainskyi reports
Kramarenko said that the situation on the Desna and Seim rivers is under constant control.
According to the results of water samples from the Seim and Desna rivers taken on 04.09.2024, organic pollution is recorded.
According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre, the contamination may reach the Desna water intake in Kyiv around 10-12 September.
Experts report that there is a slight exceedance of the standard for chemical oxygen demand (COD) at the water intake points in Kyiv and Brovary, as well as an increased content of total iron and manganese, and indicators of biogenic and chemical pollution are within the normal range. There are no risks to water intake.
What is the situation with water quality in the capital?
The KCSA reported that the water quality situation in the capital is under control. Specialised services are constantly monitoring the condition of drinking water in Kyiv and water in the waters of the Desna and Dnipro rivers.
“If the water quality deteriorates, Kyivvodokanal will immediately adjust its technological processes and use additional reagents for water disinfection to ensure that the quality of drinking water meets the requirements of the State Sanitary Norms and Rules. The algorithms for preventing water quality deterioration were discussed at the Standing Committee on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergencies,” the statement said.
According to the Desnianskyi Basin Water Resources Administration of the State Water Agency of Ukraine, there is a deterioration in the water quality of the Seim River.
However, according to regulatory authorities, there is no reason to panic at the moment – the quality of drinking water in the capital remains normal. And in case the situation worsens, the city services are developing a set of measures that will provide Kyiv consumers with drinking water.
“Individual organisations and institutions can also develop plans to protect themselves and respond to any possible scenarios. In particular, they can ask their subordinate enterprises to create water reserves. We emphasise that such actions do not indicate an emergency. We ask the media not to manipulate information and not to create panic,” the Kyiv City State Administration summarised.
