Joe Biden’s administration has extended temporary humanitarian protection for nearly 1 million immigrants living in the United States. And it announced this step a few days before the start of a possible deportation campaign by the new Trump administration. This was reported by The Washington Post, according to Komersant ukrainskyi.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, immigrants from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine, and Sudan who have a form of temporary residence known as temporary protected status will now be eligible to extend their permits for 18 months. Biden’s decision, as Reuters emphasizes, postpones possible attempts by President-elect Donald Trump to reverse this protection.

By far, the largest group to benefit from Biden’s move is Venezuelans: approximately 600,000 people who have left Venezuela are eligible to renew their protected status until October 2026.

According to HHS estimates, Biden’s decision also affects about 232,000 Salvadorans who are eligible for extended protection, as well as 103,700 Ukrainians and 1,900 Sudanese.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which administers the program, immigrants from 17 countries currently have such protection.
