For many parents, vacations begin with a headache: where to send their children for a vacation if they have no relatives in the village, is there a possibility to relax at sea, where is the safest place to go given the shelling of the country’s territory, and how much does it all cost? All these questions are answered by "Komersant Ukrainian".

The entire tourism industry in Ukraine is currently going through hard times. Children’s health camps are no exception. Many of them are in the occupied territory, while others have closed for security reasons or did not dare to open in order not to endanger their children. In fact, today there are only a few popular destinations left for children’s recreation,” says [Kommersant]natalia Siutkina, director of the Yastreb-Tour travel agency, tells "Komersant Ukrainian". “These are the western regions: Zakarpattia and Prykarpattia, as well as abroad, especially when it comes to vacationing at sea.

There are many options in western Ukraine

Parents are eager to send their children to camps closer to the western border of Ukraine. And there are nuances there.

Prices start from 14 to 36 thousand hryvnias for a shift of 10-15 days. On average, a voucher costs UAH 20-22 thousand. It all depends on the location of the resort, living conditions, and planned activities. The location is of great importance. For example, the Artek camp in Bukovel has an average shift cost of 25 thousand UAH, while in the nearby villages of Subotyn, Mykulychyn, Kosiv, the shift costs from 11 to 18 thousand UAH. “This amount includes accommodation, 4 meals a day, excursions and animation,” says the head of the travel agency.

“Recently, there has been a tendency to organize children’s recreation not in specialized camps, as it was in the USSR, but travel agencies buy rooms in mini-hotels for 22-24 people or rent a manor house with a dining room, a place for games, a swimming pool, a court, etc. and equip them for children’s recreation. Moreover, there is no shortage of hotels in western Ukraine. They hire educators and animators to take care of the children and take them on excursions. It’s basically a summer camp without parents. And most importantly, it can be reached by train or bus.

The choice of camps is very large and has different themes. There are health camps, project camps, and tourist camps. It is important to set priorities. If a child wants to learn a language, such as English, there are specialized camps both in Ukraine and abroad. There are eco-camps with an emphasis on studying nature and wildlife, where they practice river rafting, hiking in the mountains and forest. Or there are thematic changes.

Bulgaria is a leader among foreign destinations

After the start of the full-scale invasion, children’s camps abroad became especially popular. Especially in Bulgaria, where there are a lot of them and for every budget, notes Natalia Siutkina. “The cost there depends on the region and proximity to the sea – 1st or 2nd line, but usually not much more expensive than in Ukraine. On average, 11 days in Bulgaria cost 22 thousand hryvnias (500 euros ) with travel. You can choose a tour for 9, 11, or 15 days plus two nights. The only inconvenience is the road, because you have to spend up to 32 hours on the bus, not including possible delays at the border.

Vacations in Bulgaria are now very popular among parents who want their children to relax at sea. Children aged 8 to 18 can be sent there. The cost depends on the living conditions – there are rooms with all the amenities, which are more expensive, and on the program offered by the host party. The better the conditions, the higher the price, just like everywhere else,” emphasizes the agency director.

In addition to budget Bulgaria, there are many camps in Turkey, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Spain, and Italy. But they are more expensive. For example, in Spain, a 10-day shift in June will cost 43,600 UAH (1,090 EUR), and in July it will cost 1,290 EUR. In Croatia, on the Adriatic coast, 10 days cost about 35 thousand UAH until September. This applies to seaside vacations. But children also go on vacation to Moldova and Poland.

Of course, due to the lack of air travel, we mostly have to take children by bus, which is long and tiring. In addition, you need to collect a package of documents: notarized permission from parents, the child’s passport (not laminated), and insurance.

Last year, a lot of children vacationed abroad. Much more than in camps in Ukraine. After all, if we compare the pricing policy, the change in Bulgaria is the same as in Ukraine. Plus, there is the sea. And this year, our vacation on the Black Sea is a big question mark. Zatoka may not even open. Today, there is only one offer for Zatoka – a family vacation in a complex with 240 beds: uAH 12-13 thousand for 10 days with three meals a day in a double room,” says Natalia Siutkina.

“As a result, parents have a choice – to send their children abroad or to leave them in Ukraine. Despite the fact that many camps will not work this year, especially on the Black Sea coast, it is still possible to find an acceptable option. In Odesa and nearby, children’s camps have started operating in spite of everything. There are not many of them, but they are there, and their cost is the same as for a vacation in Zakarpattia.

But today, day camps are at the peak of popularity: for 300-800 UAH per day, a child can spend time in his or her hometown or district. At the same time, there are specialized camps for children aged 3 to 7 years old – with meals, daytime sleep, but returning home in the evening. And most importantly, the organizers guarantee safety. Fortunately, there is a lot of choice.
