Two power units at Ukrainian nuclear power plants have reduced their capacity, which has led to an increase in the generation deficit by 625 MW. This was reported by Ekonomichna Pravda, citing its sources, according to Komersant ukrainskyi
According to the information provided, the problems with one of the units began in the spring of 2023, when 200 MW of power was lost at one of the nuclear power plants.
And yesterday, on 3 September 2024, the capacity of one of the units at another nuclear power plant also decreased, which caused an additional deficit of 425 MW.
Energy expert Oleh Popenko said that it was the South Ukrainian NPP, where the main circulation pump failed. He stressed that fixing this problem could be a lengthy process and, in this regard, expressed doubts about the quality of the scheduled repairs carried out by Energoatom. However, according to him, there is no reason to expect the blackouts to end now.
“This means that the blackouts will be constant until the start of the heating season. This means that Energoatom is headed by complete idiots. Back in July, I wrote that all these accelerated repairs at nuclear power plants would not lead to good. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened. Power outages will continue until the start of the heating season and until it ends,”

As reported , this year Energoatom is carrying out scheduled repairs at 8 power units of Rivne, South Ukrainian and Khmelnytsky NPPs. The head of the company, Petro Kotin, said that the repairs are being carried out ahead of schedule.

Situation in the Ukrainian energy sector
on 29 March 2024, Russia resumed its attacks on the Ukrainian energy sector, carrying out the most massive shelling in the entire period of the full-scale war. In particular, DniproHES and other Ukrainian energy facilities were hit. Since then, Russia has been regularly shelling Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
For example, the Russians destroyed the Trypillia and Zmiiv thermal power plants, causing Centrenergo to lose 100% of its generation. Also, 5 of DTEK’s 6 thermal power plants were severely damaged.
After that, power outages started again in Ukraine, Ukrenergo introduced blackout schedules and the government raised electricity tariffs by 60% at once.
At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to build two new units at the Khmelnytsky NPP and has already received the approval of the relevant parliamentary committee. The Razumkov Centre has criticised these plans, but some experts believe that only traitors or scoundrels are against the construction of nuclear power plants today.
