In a few weeks, astronomers will be able to see the asteroid 2024 ON up close as it flies past the Earth at a safe distance. This is reported by the New York Post, according to Komersant ukrainskyi
In September, an asteroid the size of two football fields will approach the Earth. The inhabitants of our planet will be able to observe its approach on 15 September. At that time, it will be at the closest possible distance.
“The asteroid, at least 220 metres wide, which is the length of two football fields, will be visible from the Northern Hemisphere,” the newspaper writes.
Its approach to the Earth does not cause concern among astronomers, as it will fly past the Earth at a distance of about one million kilometres, which is about 2.6 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
“The 2024 ON occurs on average once every ten years. It will be possible to observe its movement on 15 September,” the journalists point out.
They also remind that asteroids are fragments of rocks left over from the formation of the Solar System 4.6 billion years ago.
