U.S. Secretary of State Rubio says how Russia’s war against Ukraine should end
22 January 08:59
The administration of US President Donald Trump is seeking to achieve a sustainable peace between Russia and Ukraine to avoid a repeat of the escalation in the future. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with CBS Mornings, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
“We don’t just want the conflict to end and then resume in two, three or four years. We want to ensure stability,” the official said.
He emphasized that the United States is ready to make every effort to end the war.
“This conflict was started by Russia and has now become protracted, bloody and destructive. It is causing huge losses for both Russia and Ukraine, but it is Ukraine that is paying the highest price, in particular through the destruction of its energy infrastructure,” the US Secretary of State added.
Rubio also mentioned the human cost, noting that the war has claimed the lives of many people and forced millions of Ukrainians to flee their homes and seek refuge abroad.
According to him, ending Russia’s war against Ukraine will become an official policy of the Donald Trump administration.
“The only way such conflicts end… is not with public statements. They end with tough, vigorous diplomacy, which the United States is committed to using in hopes of ending this conflict in a way that keeps Ukraine and our partners in the region safe, but stops the killing, death, and destruction that we’ve seen for quite some time,” Rubio concluded.

Trump’s position on Ukraine
During the election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly said that he would stop the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. Sometimes he suggested that this could happen even before that.
Also during the election, the media spread the so-called “Trump Plan”. The idea was that the United States would use its influence to stop the war and maintain the status quo. To do this, Trump would force Putin and Zelenskyy to sit down at the negotiating table. If Putin does not agree to negotiate, the United States will give Ukraine all the weapons it needs to win on the battlefield. If Zelenskyy refuses to negotiate, the United States will completely stop helping Ukraine.
This plan, in its various variations, stipulates that Russia retains the territories it temporarily occupies and that Ukraine does not join NATO.
However, later Trump seemed to “forget” about this plan. In particular, he voiced scenarios in which he would force Russia to capitulate due to the decline in world oil prices.
After Trump was elected President of the United States, one of his advisors, Brian Lanza, said that Ukraine should forget about Crimea. The president-elect’s entourage, however, was quick to deny this statement and said that Lanza could not speak for Trump.
Currently, the future US Special Representative for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, is talking about 100 days in which he wants to reach some kind of agreement.
