Christie Noem to head the US Department of Homeland Security: why it is dangerous for Ukraine

12 November 21:42

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, who opposes the provision of military and material assistance to Ukraine, will become the Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security. This was reported by Reuters with reference to its own sources, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

Noem, who was once considered a possible Republican presidential candidate, is currently serving a second four-year term as governor of South Dakota after a landslide victory in the 2022 election. She became known nationally after refusing to impose a statewide mask regime during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The politician will be a newcomer to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which has 260,000 employees. Noem will also have to quickly understand the mission of this agency, which includes border security, counterterrorism, and cybersecurity.

Noem, whose home state is closer to Canada than Mexico, has made several trips to the U.S.-Mexico border in recent years, which she called a “war zone” in January.

As governor of South Dakota, she deployed dozens of National Guard troops to help the Republican-led state of Texas secure the border.

The Ukrainian issue and Kristi Noem

in 2023, Noem claimed that US aid to Ukraine was a strategic mistake. The governor explained her position by saying that Washington’s actions allegedly push Russia to cooperate with China, which means that Russia will be able to use “a large arsenal of Chinese weapons.”

She also claimed that over the past five years, the United States has spent more money on aid to Ukraine than on the U.S.-Mexico border.
