on 29 August, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the Fallen Defenders, and this year this date will be marked with a special promotion in restaurants across the country. In 555 restaurants that have joined the initiative, one table will remain reserved for the whole day. This is a table in memory of the people who gave their lives for Ukraine at the front, Komersant ukrainskyi reports, citing the organisers of the campaign.
The event was initiated by Maria Grabar together with the Ilya Grabar Charitable Foundation in memory of her beloved, who died fighting for Ukraine, and other fallen heroes.
Last year, 100 establishments joined the campaign.
According to Maria Grabar, she learned about the event from a friend of her who is an American soldier. He told her that the US celebrates Memorial Day, when they honour all the soldiers who have fallen for their country, and then set a table for them at home and in institutions. He advised that such an event could be organised in Ukraine, and he came up with the text for the plaques that are placed on the table. Maria designed them, made a presentation, and changed the symbols to those that are close to Ukrainian culture.
This year’s event is being held in conjunction with the Memorial Platform. The organisers’ goal is to scale it up and make it sustainable.
on 29 August, participants will reserve special tables in memory of the fallen defenders, decorated with symbols of remembrance, including lamps, photos and flowers.
