Black ice: drivers warned about a dangerous winter phenomenon on the roads

In winter, drivers can face a danger that not everyone knows about – black ice on the roads. This is one of the most insidious types of ice, which dramatically increases the risk of an accident. Automotive experts told The Sun about it, Komersant ukrainskyi reports

In fact, this ice is not black, but transparent. The fact is that a driver or pedestrian does not see the ice itself – they only see a black asphalt road, which, at first glance, seems to be only wet. But in fact, a thin crust of ice has formed on it.

Black ice is more likely to form in warm winters, such as this year’s in Ukraine. Most often, this phenomenon is observed when the temperature of the asphalt is lower than the air and drops below zero.

For example, rain or fog fell on the road during the day at a positive temperature. The moisture settles on the asphalt, and at night it freezes slightly and turns into a transparent layer of ice.

The main danger of black ice is its invisibility. So, first of all, drivers should be careful. It is worth remembering that black ice is a type of ice and not to forget the rules of driving on slippery roads. So you should avoid sudden steering movements, accelerate and brake smoothly, and drive as slowly as possible.

On models with a manual transmission, do not disengage the gear. And, of course, high-quality winter tires will allow you to better control the car in icy conditions.
