Chernivtsi region is the first in Ukraine to implement the School Ombudsman project

The first Solemn Academy of School Ombudsmen took place in Chernivtsi, where 270 newly elected School Ombudsmen of Bukovyna were introduced. Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, reported on this event and his participation in it, Komersant ukrainskyi informs.
The School Ombudsman project was initiated by the Office of the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights and implemented by the Ombudsman’s Office in Chernivtsi region in cooperation with the Department of Education and Science.
According to Dmytro Lubinets, at the meeting he shared with his younger colleagues the experience and secrets of the Ombudsman’s work and gladly answered the students’ questions.
The Department of Education and Science of the Chernivtsi Regional Military Administration believes that the school ombudsman should become the voice of every student, a guarantor of justice and equality in the school community. They should unite students, help resolve conflicts, counteract bullying, and maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust in the educational institution.
According to Dmytro Lubinets, there are plans to implement the School Ombudsman project in every school in every region of Ukraine.
Who is the School Ombudsman?
A school ombudsman is an independent and impartial representative of the student government elected to protect the rights of students and represent their interests, ensure compliance with the principles of fairness, equality, non-discrimination, and safety in the educational institution.
He or she is an intermediary between students, teachers, school administration, and the parent community.
The School Ombudsman represents the interests of students in resolving conflicts, speaks at school meetings and sessions, initiates investigations of violations of students’ rights before the administration of the educational institution, and participates in meetings of the Board of the educational institution.
The school ombudsman is accountable to the administration of the educational institution, student and parent self-government and is supervised by the head of the educational institution.
