Almost 70 settlements in 5 regions are without power due to bad weather

Deteriorating weather conditions have led to new challenges for Ukraine’s energy system. Due to thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rains, dozens of settlements were left without power, and electricity consumption increased due to unfavorable weather. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Ukrenergo.

Consequences of the bad weather

As of the morning of May 5, 68 settlements in five regions of Ukraine were completely or partially without electricity. The cause was wind gusts, heavy rains and hail that damaged power grids.

Currently, the regional power company’s repair crews are working in an emergency mode to restore power to all consumers as soon as possible.

Increase in electricity consumption

Due to cloudy weather and precipitation, electricity consumption on May 5 increased by 8.6% compared to the same period of the previous business day (Friday).

According to Ukrenergo, the reason for this is cloudy weather and precipitation in some regions, which leads to low efficiency of household solar power plants and a corresponding increase in energy consumption from the general grid.

For comparison, yesterday’s daily maximum (May 4) was 6.7% lower than the previous Sunday’s maximum, due to warmer weather last week.

Restoration of the power system

Ukraine’s power grid continues to recover from massive Russian missile and drone attacks. Emergency repairs are underway at power facilities to stabilize the grid.

Nevertheless, the bad weather poses additional challenges for the energy sector.
