Kharkiv, Dnipro, Poltava are being covered by a sandstorm, according to the weather forecast website Windy, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
The bulk of the dust is coming to Ukraine from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Russia.
Tonight and tomorrow afternoon, 1 October, the situation will worsen at least five times, Windy predicts.
Residents of Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Poltava have posted on local social media about the poor air quality and cars covered in dust.
“The air quality in Kharkiv is terrible now, the sun is not visible through the smog, cars are covered in yellow dust, it’s hard to breathe,” residents wrote on social media.
“Friends, keep your windows closed and wear respirators on the streets,” a call goes out in Poltava.
The Sumy Regional Environmental Agency reports a serious deterioration in air quality in the eastern and northeastern regions of Ukraine due to the atmospheric vortex of dust and smog from Russia.
“The highest concentration of particles in the air is currently recorded in Sumy, Poltava, Dnipro and Mykolaiv regions. It is better to limit your stay outside and close the windows,” the statement said.
