“We will burn”: a weather forecaster raises the alarm over the prolonged lack of rain in Ukraine

21 March 11:33

In the coming days, the weather in Ukraine will change from dry to rainy, but this is good news, as rain is now essential to prevent forest fires and droughts. This was reported by weather forecaster Natalia Golenya in an exclusive commentary to Komersant ukrainskyi.

On Saturday, March 22, the weather will be mostly without precipitation and warm, with daytime temperatures of 11-16 degrees Celsius, the expert said. But soon atmospheric fronts from the west and southwest will bring precipitation.

“At first, in the western, northern, central regions, and later, by the end of next week, almost the entire country will experience light to moderate rains. In some places, there may be thunderstorms on 25-26,”

– the forecaster noted.

As for the temperature, Golenya predicts that it will remain moderately warm.

“The temperature background, in principle, remains the same, from 10 to 17-18 degrees Celsius. However, in case of rains, the temperature background in the west and north of the country may be lower – about 10 degrees,”

– she clarified.

The forecaster also drew attention to the increase in wind. Over the weekend, it should be expected in the northwestern regions and Odesa region, and on Monday – in most of the country, except for the east and far west. Some gusts will be 15-20 meters per second in some places.

“We really need the rains”

When asked about the return of dry weather, Natalia Golenya responded with particular concern.

“In fact, we can’t wait for the rains. We really need the rains because without them we will burn. So we shouldn’t emphasize how beautiful the weather is [without rain],”

– she emphasized, explaining that the current dry weather poses a serious threat.

According to the forecaster, the situation is particularly critical for the agricultural sector.

“The situation in agriculture in the central and southern regions is critical, the drought is beginning there,”

– Golenya said.

She also reminded that the moisture deficit was observed in winter, and although there was more precipitation in the west and north of the country, it was still not enough.

“The west and north had some more precipitation, but still not enough. Long periods of dry weather can lead to massive forest fires. That’s why rain is exactly what we need now, it’s critical,”

– Natalia Golenya summarized.
