During a press conference with US President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that Britain is ready to send its troops and planes to Ukraine to support the peace agreement, Komersant ukrainskyi reports

“We are taking on more responsibility for security. I’m working closely with other European leaders on this, and I’m clear that the United Kingdom is prepared to send troops and aircraft to support the agreement, working together with our allies. Because that is the only way that peace will last,” said Keir Starmer.

He added that the UK is preparing significant military assistance for Ukraine, which he will announce later.

Starmer clarified that 18 countries are already involved in the process of peace talks and a possible peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

“The United Kingdom will play a full role in securing an agreement if it is concluded. And we hope that a deal will be made in Ukraine and it must be respected,” the British Prime Minister assured.

When President Trump repeated his statement that Ukraine will return the money to Europeans that they provided to fight Russia, Keir Starmer politely corrected him.

“Maybe it got a little bit tense because we wanted to have a little bit of what the European countries had. You know, they get their money back. When we give money, we don’t get it back. Biden made a deal. He invested $350 billion, and I thought it was a very unfair situation,” Trump said amid a story about his “very good relationship” with the Ukrainian leader.

At this point, Starmer interjected and said:

“We don’t get everything we want. I mean, there have been loans, but mostly it’s been a gift.”

Security of Ukraine and Europe

The Munich Security Conference 2025 came as a real shock to many and a cold shower to European politicians after US representatives voiced their vision of the future security model in Europe and the world. In particular, US Vice President Jay DeVance ‘s speech was about Europe no longer relying on the US security umbrella, as the US will no longer guarantee it. The Europeans were also told that the security of Ukraine after the ceasefire with Russia will also be on their shoulders, as it concerns European affairs, from which the United States is withdrawing.

And now the United States does not even “physically” see Europe at the table with Russia.

Against this backdrop, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the creation of the European Armed Forces. This idea has already been quickly rejected in Poland.

Europeans were shocked by this turn from the United States. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was the first to recover, saying that his country “can and will” send its contingent to Ukraine as a peacekeeper if a truce with Russia is concluded.

on February 17, French President Emmanuel Macron urgently convened the heads of “leading European states” to form a common position on this issue. However, it was not achieved. As it turned out, Britain, France, and Sweden were in favor of sending peacekeeping contingents to Ukraine, while Germany, Poland, Italy, and Spain were against it. Later, Macron said he was not going to send troops to Ukraine.

Trump’s position on Ukraine

During the election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly said that he would stop the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. This deadline has already passed.

Also during the election, the media spread the so-called “Trump Plan”. The plan was that the United States would use its influence to stop the war, taking into account the status quo. To do this, Trump would force Putin and Zelenskyy to sit down at the negotiating table. If Putin does not agree to negotiate, the United States will give Ukraine all the weapons it needs to win on the battlefield. If Zelenskyy refuses to negotiate, the United States will completely stop helping Ukraine.

This plan, in its various variations, included a provision that Russia would retain the territories it temporarily occupied and that Ukraine would not join NATO.

However, later Trump seemed to “forget” about this plan. In particular, he voiced scenarios in which he would force Russia to capitulate due to the decline in world oil prices.

After Trump was elected President of the United States, one of his advisors, Brian Lanza, said that Ukraine should forget about Crimea. Trump’s entourage, however, was quick to deny this statement and said that Lanza could not speak on his behalf.

Currently, the US Special Representative for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, is talking about 100 days within which he wants to reach some kind of agreement. Of these, 37 days have already passed. During this time, the US Presidential Administration has established contact with the Kremlin, an American envoy has traveled to Moscow, and a meeting of the highest level negotiators has taken place in Saudi Arabia. Ukraine was not present at this meeting.

Meanwhile, in exchange for military support, US President Donald Trump demanded $500 billion worth of rare earth metals from Ukraine. He said that the US should have access to Ukraine’s natural resources, regardless of whether Kyiv manages to reach a peace agreement with Russia.
