Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has accused the West of lacking resolve in supporting Ukraine during Joe Biden’s presidency. Speaking at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, Johnson said that Western countries did not dare to provide Ukraine with everything it needed to win, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“Over the past two years, we have only tried to prevent Ukraine from failing, but we have not had the courage to help it win,” Johnson said.
He also praised former U.S. President Donald Trump for transferring weapons to Ukraine back in 2018, despite his current statements about the possibility of peace talks with Russia.
Asked about his earlier positive assessment of Trump, Johnson said that such leaders “listen to many voices” before making decisions. At the same time, he expressed concern, but noted that he did not believe that Trump would allow Ukraine to fail – at least from a political point of view.
Johnson emphasized that the war negotiations are now in a crucial phase, and the West needs to realize that Putin is not interested in peace.
“I’m afraid of a very dangerous scenario – the end of the war on Putin’s terms, with the cessation of arms supplies to Ukraine and a guarantee that it will not join NATO. It will be a complete disaster,” he warned.
According to the former prime minister, such an outcome would only destabilize Ukraine and create the basis for a new invasion.
Boris Johnson, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has consistently expressed strong support for the Ukrainian people and called on the West to take more active action since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Johnson’s main statements and actions in support of Ukraine:
Support for Ukraine’s accession to NATO: In March 2023, Johnson stated that there is no argument against Ukraine joining NATO, emphasizing the need to provide Ukraine with long-range artillery, missiles, tanks, and aircraft to achieve military victory.
Criticizing Trump’s peace proposals: In April 2025, Johnson criticized Donald Trump’s peace plan, pointing out that it does not bring any benefit to Ukraine and actually rewards Russia by allowing it to keep the occupied territories.
Calls for more active assistance: In January 2023, during a visit to Kyiv, Johnson called on the international community to redouble its efforts and provide Ukraine with all the necessary means to win, emphasizing that the only way to end the war is for Ukraine to win.
Support for armed assistance: In April 2022, Johnson made a surprise visit to Kyiv, pledging military vehicles and missiles, emphasizing the UK’s long-term support for Ukraine.
Condemnation of Russian aggression: In May 2022, Johnson addressed the Ukrainian parliament, stating that there should be no peaceful settlement imposed against the will of the Ukrainian people and pledging the UK’s long-term support.
Johnson’s position in support of Ukraine remains consistent and resolute, with an emphasis on the need for active Western action to ensure Ukraine’s victory and deter Russian aggression
