The administration of US President Joe Biden is concerned that Ukraine may face “brutal retaliation” from Russia for the attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Kursk region. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi news agency citing The Wall Street Journal ( WSJ ) .
According to the newspaper, which cites its sources in the White House, American officials fear a massive Russian strike on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure in response to the Ukrainian military’s operation in the Kursk region of Russia.
“Ukraine’s offensive against Russia (Kursk region), after its rapid success, has faced a dilemma… Kyiv’s forces are still outgunned and outnumbered in many places,” the newspaper writes.
The dilemma for the Ukrainian leadership is whether the desire for further victories is worth spending significantly more troops and military equipment, which are desperately needed on the eastern front of Ukraine, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces are trying to hold back the advance of Russian troops.
The Wall Street Journal described the Ukrainian military’s operation in Kursk as a high-stakes move, given the lack of manpower and military equipment on the eastern front.
However, the newspaper also notes that in addition to tactical military victories, Ukraine has shown that it has the courage and ability to covertly plan and execute a complex offensive.
“They have completely changed the strategic narrative with this attack,” said John Nagle, a retired lieutenant colonel in the US Army.
