Bloomberg: Finland’s president says Trump will bring peace to Ukraine quickly
12 November 10:56Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that his conversation with Donald Trump the day before confirmed that the president-elect should be taken seriously when he talks about ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. This was reported by Bloomberg, Komersant ukrainskyi informs.
“We in Europe and around the world must understand that Donald Trump is very serious about reaching a peace agreement as soon as possible. In addition, there is a window of opportunity for these negotiations between the election and the inauguration day,” Stubb said in an interview.
Speaking at the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Stubb listed four preconditions for peace in Ukraine.
They include territory – “and here we do not know where everything will settle. The second is security guarantees, the third is justice, and “then, actually, the fourth is recovery,” he added.
At the end of last month, the Finnish president met with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a visit to Beijing, and they also discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Stubb urged Xi Jinping to talk to Putin about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
At a press conference in Beijing after his meeting with Xi, Stubb said he had a “very constructive, very open and very direct conversation” with Xi about Russia’s full-scale aggression in Ukraine.
“Both Finland and China want peace in Ukraine, but there can be no peace without (involving) Ukraine. Therefore, in my opinion, the starting point for peace should be Ukraine’s five-point ‘victory plan’ and a 10-point ‘peace plan’,” Stubb said. – “Although I respect the six-point peace plans put forward by China and Brazil, I think they lack key elements, such as (provisions of) international law and the UN Charter.
Separately, the Finnish president emphasized that “it is very difficult to trust President Putin, especially when it comes to nuclear weapons.” “And so, as Alexander Stubb put it, it is very important that a leading power like China continues to have a dialogue with Russia and makes sure that everything is done to de-escalate the situation as much as possible.”
