No pressure and no show: new Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko shares his work plans
17 June 21:30
Ruslan Kravchenko, whose candidacy for the post of Prosecutor General of Ukraine was supported by 273 MPs, thanked the President of Ukraine for his trust and shared his plans for his new job. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the official Telegram channel of the official.
The new head of the Prosecutor General’s Office begins his work during a full-scale war, which imposes a special responsibility on him. He has already stated that in the face of daily missile and drone attacks by Russia, he will try to ensure fair punishment for everyone who has committed crimes against civilian Ukrainians.
Kravchenko also spoke about his experience: he worked in the system for 11 years, investigated the most complex cases, was an investigator at the Sevastopol City Prosecutor’s Office before the temporary occupation of Crimea, and worked at the Rivne, Lviv, and military prosecutor’s offices. He investigated the case of former President Viktor Yanukovych, after which the Investigative Committee of Russia and the Basmanny Court of Moscow put him on the wanted list. He met the full-scale war as the head of the Bucha prosecutor’s office.
Ruslan Kravchenko sees his main task in his new position as ensuring the rule of law and justice.
This includes restoring the role of the prosecutor’s office as the main coordinator of the entire law enforcement system, ensuring cooperation between structures and avoiding competition between them,” he wrote.
The Prosecutor General also emphasized the need to restore confidence in the prosecutor’s office on the part of society, international partners and the Verkhovna Rada. To do this, it is necessary to collect all the necessary information for the International Criminal Court in The Hague in order to punish all those responsible for crimes committed by Russia on Ukrainian territory.
Equally important, Kravchenko said, is ensuring justice in each case and punishment only after a thorough analysis of the entire situation, which will help avoid mistakes and punishment of the innocent.
The measure of justice cannot be a majority vote. Justice cannot depend on the opinion of the prosecutor based only on the formal compliance of the act with an article of the Criminal Code. When deciding on a person’s fate, we need to see not only the offense, but also the person who committed it. We must take into account his or her life path, motive, reputation, the circumstances under which it happened, and even the time when it happened,” Kravchenko said.
Speaking about the prosecutors, he emphasized the need to improve their working conditions and ensure fair pay. He puts this issue on cooperation with the Verkhovna Rada and specialized committees.
The new Prosecutor General also emphasized the need to improve cooperation with other branches of government, ensure transparency of the prosecutor’s office, and improve communication with the public.
The official declared his independence from political influence and that he would act only on the basis of the Constitution and laws of Ukraine. He also rejected the possibility of using the position to settle scores or to administer show trials.
