Auction of generosity: Ukraine hands over metals deal to US; Shmyhal offers minerals to EU

As it became known from representatives of the Ukrainian delegation at the Munich Security Conference, Ukraine has finalized a draft memorandum of partnership and submitted it to the United States for consideration. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to Suspilne.

“During a phone conversation on Wednesday, Zelenskyy and Trump agreed that Ukraine would finalize the draft memorandum of partnership and hand it over to the Americans at the Munich conference. Ukraine handed over the document and the American side asked for time until 5 p.m. on Friday to work with it,”

– a source in the delegation said.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal offered Ukrainian minerals to the EU. In his column for Politico, writing about Ukraine’s accession to the EU and outlining the benefits to a united Europe of such a step, Shmyhal mentioned Ukraine’s fossil resources.

“Ukraine has 22 out of 30 minerals that are critical for the EU. It ranks first in Europe in terms of uranium ore reserves, having the ability to meet its own energy needs as well as export uranium – especially as the demand for nuclear energy in Europe is growing. Ukraine also has the largest lithium reserves in Europe, and its use in the world is only growing,”

– the Prime Minister wrote.

Shmyhal claims that Ukraine is ready to create joint ventures with the EU in this field, which will undoubtedly lead to a strategic advantage for the European Union.

“In addition, Ukraine is among the top ten countries with proven titanium ore reserves, and only 10 percent of these proven reserves are currently being developed. We could replace Russian titanium on the European market, contributing to the development of both the EU’s civilian industry and advanced military technologies. Not to mention the fact that, unlike the Russian partnership, which is based on blackmail and deception, we can be relied on,”

– denys Shmyhal convinced the Europeans.

As previously reported, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent brought a draft agreement on Ukrainian rare earth metals during his recent visit to Ukraine, to which the United States wants to gain access in exchange for support. US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States wants to receive $500 billion worth of such metals, regardless of how his peacekeeping efforts end. Ukraine has taken time to work on this project and promised to provide its response during the meeting of delegations at the Munich Security Conference, which began today and will last for three days.
