Apple or Samsung: Viber researches which smartphones are most popular in Ukraine

25 March 15:07

Samsung remained the most popular smartphone brand among Ukrainians, but Apple gadgets took the second place. This was reported by the specialized publication Dev.ua with reference to a study of the Rakuten Viber platform, according to Komersant ukrainskyi.

At the same time, 75% of users use Android smartphones. This is another conclusion of the Viber study.

What are the most popular smartphone brands among Viber users in Ukraine?

Samsung is on the first position of the rating.

Apple and Redmi exchanged positions. And now Apple is the second most popular brand in Ukraine, although last year it was in third place, and Redmi dropped from second place in 2024 to third this year.

Xiaomi and Poco came next.

The Poco brand replaced Huawei in fifth place, which took eighth place, losing out to Motorola and Oppo.

Which smartphone models are preferred by Viber users in Ukraine

The most popular models are invariably devices from two brands – Apple and Redmi.

The first and second places in the ranking were taken by iPhone 11 and iPhone 13, overtaking last year’s leader Redmi 9A.

The following are the top ten most popular: iPhone 15 Pro Max, Redmi 9 °C NFC, iPhone 14 Pro Max, Redmi Note 13, iPhone 12, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone XR.

Android dominates iOS

As noted in the Rakuten Viber study, Android smartphones traditionally prevail over iOS devices: 75% of Ukrainians now prefer Android.

However, the number of iOS users continues to grow: in 2023, their share was 19%, in 2024 – 22%, and today it is already 25%, i.e. a quarter of Ukrainian Rakuten Viber users.

Top five brands in the global smartphone market

Last year, the South Korean company Samsung continued to lead the market due to the high demand for its S24 and A-series products. The S24 series, the first phone positioned as an artificial intelligence device, outperformed its predecessors and was particularly well received in Western Europe and the United States. Such estimates are contained in the report of the global research company Market Pulse Counterpoint Research.

The American corporation Apple took second place with a share of 18%. Although Apple’s iPhone 16 series was met with mixed reactions, Apple continued to grow rapidly in its non-core markets, such as Latin America, Africa, and Asia Pacific.

China’s Xiaomi grew the fastest among the top five brands last year, driven by a portfolio reorganization, a focus on premium products, and active expansion.

OPPO was in fourth position with a decline compared to the same period last year, but ended the year with greater dynamics.

Another Chinese company, VIVO, rounds out the top five, thanks to its strong performance in India and China, where it ended the year as the best original equipment manufacturer.

In other words, market researchers conclude that the top 5 remained the same as in 2023, but lost a certain share due to aggressive competition from Huawei, HONOR, and Motorola, the fastest growing OEMs among all the top 10 brands.

What about global smartphone sales?

In 2024, global smartphone sales grew by 4% year-on-year as consumer sentiment improved. Moreover, smartphone sales in 2023 were the lowest in a decade. This is also stated in the report of the global research company Market Pulse Counterpoint Research.

In 2025, experts expect that revenue growth will continue to outpace volume growth, with revenues growing by 8% compared to 4% volume growth.

As reported by Komersant ukrainskyi, the American tech giant Apple continues to fight for its share of the Chinese market, trying to counteract the growing competition from local brands such as Huawei.

The rivalry between Apple and Huawei has intensified since Huawei’s return to the premium segment last year with the Mate 60 series, which analysts believe contains a domestically produced chip. And the Chinese tech giant pushed Apple even further after entering the market with its Pura 70 model.
