Antonio Guterres arrives at BRICS summit to meet with Putin
23 October 08:08UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Kazan, Russia, ahead of the three-day BRICS summit. This was reported by the Voice of America, Komersant Ukrainian reports.
Putin is expected to meet with Guterres on the last day of the BRICS summit – on the sidelines of the summit. This was announced to journalists by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov.
The publication reminds that earlier Guterres constantly criticised Russia’s actions, saying that Moscow’s ongoing military operation in Ukraine creates a “dangerous precedent” for the world. He has repeatedly called for a just peace that respects international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
In 2022, during a meeting with Putin, Guterres reiterated the UN’s position and discussed proposals for humanitarian aid and evacuation of civilians from conflict zones.
The BRICS summit is scheduled to take place from 22 to 24 October in the Russian city of Kazan. It is to be attended by 22 leaders of the countries.
The BRICS informal grouping is named after the first letters of the member states – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Last year, they were joined by Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia and Egypt. The BRICS is considered a geopolitical opponent to the G7 and “Western” financial institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF.
