Americans are dissatisfied with Trump: his political rating is rapidly declining

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 43%, the lowest since he returned to office. This is reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to Reuters.

The three-day Reuters/Ipsos poll, which ended on Wednesday, showed that Trump’s job approval as president is down 2 percentage points from a poll conducted on March 21-23 and 4 points below the 47% approval he had shortly after taking office on January 20.

Trump received his highest approval rating of 49% during his first term shortly after taking office in January 2017. His lowest rating during his first term was 33% in December 2017. The leader’s overall approval remains higher than during most of his first term.

It is noted that Democrat Joe Biden, on the eve of the presidential election in November last year, had the lowest rating – 35%.

What Americans are dissatisfied with

Respondents gave Trump low marks for his management of the economy, which was approved by 37%, and 30% approved of his work to address the high cost of living, an issue that also plagued Biden.

About half of the respondents – 52% – agreed with the statement that the increase in tariffs on cars and auto parts, which is part of Trump’s new tariff package, will hurt people close to them. About the same number said that the tariff increase would do more harm than good.

About one-third of Americans – mostly from Trump’s Republican Party – said they disagreed with the statement that the tariffs would be harmful.

It is noted that since taking office, Trump has provoked a number of policy changes, laying off
nearly 200,000 federal workers and overturning longstanding American diplomatic norms. His tariff policies have spooked investors, leading to a stock market sell-off amid fears that they could trigger a recession.

The Signal scandal

Americans are also criticizing the Trump administration for its handling of military secrets after it was revealed last week that senior officials discussed plans to attack militants in Yemen on the commercial messaging app Signal and unknowingly shared preliminary plans with a journalist.

Some 74% of respondents in the survey – including 91% of Democrats and 55% of Republicans – said it was reckless to discuss attack plans in this way, compared to 22% who said it was a harmless oversight. Another 70% agreed that Trump should take responsibility for the issue.

Only 34% of respondents in the poll approved of Trump’s foreign policy, compared to 37% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted March 21-23. About 48% of respondents approved of Trump’s immigration policy.

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, which was conducted online and nationwide, surveyed 1,486 American adults and has a margin of error of about 3 percentage points.

It should be noted that on April 2, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of new “reciprocal tariffs” that would hit imports from around the world, including 20% for the European Union and 10% for Ukraine, calling it a “Day of Liberation” for the American economy. However, in an unexpected twist, Russia, despite its tense relations with Washington, was not included in the list of countries with additional tariffs.

The administration of US President Donald Trump is also imposing duties on imports of cars and trucks at 25%. They will come into effect on April 3.
