Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer, chairman of NATO’s military committee, said that the West should be prepared for a war with Russia. According to him, it is not only about the NATO armies, which are certainly ready for this, but also about the civilian population, reports with reference to Sky News.
Bauer argues that such a conflict, if it occurs, will require significant changes in the lives of civilians in the West.
“We have to realise that the fact that we live in peace is not a given. That is why we are preparing for a conflict with Russia. But the discussion is much broader. It is also about the industrial base and people who need to understand that they play a role,”
– said the admiral.
He added that Sweden was right to call on its population to prepare for war earlier this month.
“This is where it all has to start. With the realisation that not everything can be planned and not everything will go smoothly in the next 20 years,”
– bauer said.
The NATO official’s warning comes on the eve of NATO’s largest exercise since the end of the Cold War. They will begin next week in Norway, and possibly Lithuania and Hungary, and will involve about 90,000 troops. According to the scenario, Russia attacks a NATO country, and the allies train to use the famous Article 5. The exercises will last until May this year.
