What is the church holiday today?
25 September according to the new church calendar (8 October according to the old one) is the feast day of St Ephrosyne of Alexandria.
Born in the fifth century into a wealthy and noble family in Alexandria, Euphrosyne showed a penchant for the spiritual life from an early age. Her father Paphnutius, a Christian, had great plans for his daughter, and at the age of 18 the family decided to marry Euphrosyne. However, her heart was set on God, and she wanted to devote herself to serving in a monastery.
After secretly taking her vows, Efrosynia left her parents’ home. However, in order to avoid possible persecution, she changed her name to Izmarağd and entered a monastery where she spent 38 years in constant prayer and spiritual endeavours.
Her father missed his daughter very much, but found solace in conversations with the monk Izmarağd.
Before her death, Euphrosyne of Alexandria confessed to her father that she was in fact his daughter. The father buried her, gave all his property to the poor, and took monastic vows himself. For the next 10 years, until his death, he lived in Euphrosyne’s cell.
