World Cancer Research Day
World Cancer Research Day, celebrated annually on 24 September, is a global initiative that highlights the importance of cancer research and the invaluable contribution of researchers around the world.
These September events in the third decade of the month have a traditional annual character.
The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the importance of cancer research, support research and innovation in the field of oncology, raise funding for research projects, and inform the public about the latest advances in cancer treatment and prevention.
International Traveller’s Day
International Caravan Day is celebrated annually on 24 September.
On this day, all members of transport convoys and ship caravans are congratulated on their professional holiday. So, on 24 September, the holiday is celebrated by the crews of merchant ships, truckers and crews of escort ships.
This professional holiday was established in 1995 by the International Association for the Coordination of Freight Operations, which cares about the safety and efficiency of national and international freight transport by all modes of transport.
The date was 24 September, the birthday of the famous British navigator and explorer of the 16th and 17th centuries, William Adams (24 September 1564 – 16 May 1620). He is considered the first European to reach the shores of Japan.
World Retina Week
This week is dedicated to raising awareness of retinal diseases and the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment.
The event has been held since 2010 and aims to inform the public about the most common degenerative retinal diseases, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and others.
The retina is the inner membrane of the eye, which consists of a large number of cells that react sensitively to light rays. It is on the retina that the image is projected, which is then converted into nerve impulses and transmitted to the brain, where it is identified as a visual image.
What religious holiday is on 24 September
According to the new church calendar, today is the feast of the first martyr Thecla, who was a follower of the Apostle Paul and refused to marry.
Thecla came from a wealthy family in the city of Iconium (now part of Turkey). Her father was a pagan. When Thecla heard the apostle Paul preach, his words touched her heart deeply, and she became a Christian. She decided to give up marriage and devoted her life to God.
During her life, Tekla was repeatedly persecuted. Tekla lived to be 90 years old and died in a cave where she was hiding from pagan priests.
Saint Tekla was prayed to for healing, salvation, love and well-being in the family. There was a special tradition among our ancestors. During the day, they tried not to light a fire, but after sunset, the flames were always lit. It was believed that this would bring success and happiness. If you look at the flames and make a wish, it will definitely come true.
Folk signs:
- Birds fly low – winter will come very soon.
- A lot of acorns – a mild winter.
- There are many berries on the rowan tree – expect severe winter frosts.
