According to the new church calendar, on May 20, Ukraine honors the memory of the great martyrs Talaleya, Alexander, and Asterius. This day also marks the day of the relics of St. Alexis, who was the Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Rus.
The story of the origin of this holiday is connected with the city of Aegeus, where an 18-year-old boy named Talaley lived in the third century. One day, he was summoned by the ruler and ordered to find all the people who adhere to Christianity in order to force them to renounce their faith in God. However, the young man refused, saying that he himself was a Christian, and was condemned to death.
His executioners were Alexander and Asterius, who refused to execute the boy and began to believe in Christianity themselves. In the end, the ruler of the city ordered the execution of all three.
Believers believe that the holy great martyr Talalay should be prayed for health and a good harvest, so on this day, during prayer, it is customary to ask for healing from all diseases and the beginning of rains that will help grow a good garden.
On this day, it is customary to work in the garden, and it is especially favorable to plant cucumbers and eggplants. However, it is advisable to do this away from prying eyes to ensure a good harvest.
What not to do on May 20
Like other church holidays, this day is characterized by a number of rules and prohibitions. On the day of the great martyrs Talaleya, Alexander, and Asterius, it is forbidden to gossip:
- Swearing, gossiping, envying, insulting others, or quarreling. It is believed that a quarrel can drag on for a long time, and bad words will negatively affect your soul.
- Borrowing or lending money. Money that is borrowed on this day will leave your house forever.
- Organize noisy celebrations or abuse alcohol. Excessive merriment and noisy events go against the spiritual origin of the holiday.
- Refusing help. St. Talaley was a doctor, so on this day it is forbidden to be indifferent to sick people and refuse to help others.
